Exploration camp

CAMDEN ? Get ready to fall into autumn in October and join Sarah Lambson, Merryspring Nature Center environmental educator, for a weekend of activities, and outdoor discovery when Merryspring holds its first Autumn Exploration Camp. The day camp will be held 9 a.m.-noon Saturday and Sunday, Oct. 15-16. The cost is $25 for center members, $30 others.

Participants will uncover the mystery behind the changing of the leaves, learn autumn tree identification, how to make shelters in the woods and go seed collecting. Much of the time will be spent outdoors, exploring nature as a group, and participants will learn how to make apple crisp.

Appleton Bog hike

APPLETON ? Nancy Sferra of The Nature Conservancy will lead a walk through Appleton Bog 1-5 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 6. Hikers should meet at Stovers Corner in Appleton at the intersection of Lower Road and West Appleton Road. Parking is limited so carpooling is recommended. The hike will cover approximately 4 miles through the extensive bog system owned by The Nature Conservancy. Attendees are asked to bring water, snacks, and wear shoes or boots you don?t mind getting wet.

Appleton Bog drains into the Georges River watershed as well as the Medomak River watershed. The Nature Conservancy owns 1,244 acres at Appleton Bog acquired through a series of donations and purchases starting in 1972. The primary focus is protection of the Atlantic white cedar bog and associated wetland systems. It is one of the premier resources in the region because of the variety of wetland systems it hosts. Although small Atlantic white cedar swamps are scattered in southern Maine, Appleton Bog is one of two large Atlantic white cedar bogs in Maine; the other significant bog is Saco Heath.
