While a properly drafted and executed Last Will and Testament may work to transfer assets to your heirs or beneficiaries, it probably will not resolve problems with probate avoidance, estate taxes, or ensuring your choices are respected in the event of incapacity. To fully protect your lasting legacy, a good estate planning attorney can show you how to:
Transfer assets from your estate while maintaining the control and benefit of the assets during your lifetime, and at the same time avoiding or minimizing the burden and expense of probate;
Reduce exposure to estate taxes by means of a revocable living trust;
Make sure all your assets are transferred into your revocable living trust in order to avoid probate;
Make sure that any missed assets are transferred into the living trust by means of the pour-over will upon your death (this should only be used in case of a missed or unknown asset, this should not be relied upon as a means on transferring assets into your trust because the pour-over Will must be probated in order to transfer the assets);
Provide for the guardianship of minor children to avoid the need for a formal guardianship proceeding;
Prepare a life insurance trust that can either serve as a means of transferring assets estate tax free upon death, or as a fund from which estate taxes can be paid if they cannot be avoided altogether;
Set up a durable powers of attorney to designate a trusted individual to make financial decisions on your behalf in the event of incapacity (the need for this can all but be eliminated with the use of a fully funded revocable living trust);
Create advance health care directives to cover medical decisions (health care surrogate and living will), outlining your preferences for medical treatment and life support under extreme and terminal conditions and organ donation;
Give your beneficiaries asset protection for the assets you leave to them upon death;
Provide for special-needs beneficiaries who will receive assets upon your death (this will ensure they do not forfeit their government benefits they are currently receiving);
Give you options on how to leave assets to a charity upon your death;
Allow you to provide for the care of pets you own upon your death;
Give you options on how to pass your business to others upon your death or to prevent a surviving business partner from having to work with an unwanted partner; and
Possibly most importantly, to give you peace of mind now because you know that your wishes will be fulfilled upon your passing.

The Mars Curiosity rover's robotic arm takes aim at Mount Sharp in a mosaic that combines navigation-camera imagery from Sols 12 and 14 (Aug. 18 and 20).
By Alan Boyle
If you want to know where NASA's Curiosity rover is heading, all you have to do is look where its robotic arm is pointing in this picture. The Martian mosaic was pieced together like a jigsaw puzzle by Ken Kremer and Marco Di Lorenzo, using black-and-white pictures from the rover's navigation camera system.
The robotic arm was raised into what looks like a pointing position as part of this week's checkout for Curiosity's $2.5 billion mission. When fully extended, the arm can stretch out for 7 feet (2.1 meters). About 66 pounds' (30 kilograms') worth of scientific instruments, including a camera and an X-ray spectrometer, are mounted on the end of the arm.
The arm is pointing at a 3-mile-high (5-kilometer-high) mountain known as Aeolis Mons or Mount Sharp ? a mound inside Mars' Gale Crater whose layers of rock could reveal a geological record going back billions of years. During its two-year mission, Curiosity is expected to make the 12-mile (20-kilometer) trek to the mountain's flanks for one of the most sophisticated scientific investigations ever conducted on Mars.
But first things first: After testing the robotic arm, Curiosity is ready to roll its wheels on Mars for the first time, more than two weeks after its high-stakes landing. For more about that, check out today's report from mission managers as well as the Curiosity files on NBCNews.com.
Bonus round: Here's another view of the rover and Mount Sharp, pieced together by Kremer and Di Lorenzo from an assortment of navigation camera imagery and "colorized" to reflect Mars' reddish tones:

A colorized view of the Curiosity rover's surroundings draws upon navigation camera imagery, with the Martian sky filled in.

A new study of nine coastal cities around the world suggests that Shanghai is most vulnerable to serious flooding. European cities top the leader board for their resilience.
These finding are based on a new method to calculate the flood vulnerability of cities, developed by a team of researchers from the Netherlands and the University of Leeds. The work is published in the latest edition of the journal Natural Hazards.
The index does not just look at the likelihood of a city's exposure to a major 'once in a hundred years' flood. The researchers have been careful to include social and economic factors in their calculations too.
The index incorporates 19 components, including measures of the level of economic activity in a city, its speed of recovery, and social issues such as the number of flood shelters, the awareness of people about flood risks, and the number of disabled people in the population. Several index components also look at the level of administrative involvement in flood management.
The researchers used their index to analyse the vulnerability to coastal flooding of nine cities built on river deltas: Casablanca (Morocco), Calcutta (India), Dhaka (Bangladesh), Buenos Aires (Argentina), Osaka (Japan), Shanghai (China), Manila (Philippines), Marseille (France) and Rotterdam (the Netherlands).
The results of the analysis reveal that the highly prosperous megapolis of Shanghai, in China, is more vulnerable than much poorer cities such as Dhaka in Bangladesh.
"Vulnerability is a complex issue," explains Professor Nigel Wright, who led the team from the University of Leeds. "It is not just about your exposure to flooding, but the effect it actually has on communities and business and how much a major flood disrupts economic activity. Our index looks at how cities are prepared for the worst for example, do they have flood defences, do they have buildings that are easy to clean up and repair after the flood? It is important to know how quickly a city can recover from a major flood."
Shanghai's is particularly vulnerable because it is exposed to powerful storm surges and the land is subsiding as sea levels rise. Moreover, although a large population lives along the coast in flood-prone areas, but the city is poorly prepared, with little resilience to a major flood and insufficient flood shelters for victims.
"A 1-in-100 year flood in Shanghai would lead to widespread damage, with serious consequences for the city, across China and, through wider economic links, for the whole world," Professor Wright comments.
The vulnerability index also revealed that Dhaka, which sits just metres above current sea levels, is regularly hit by tropical cyclones and floods, yet it has few defences in place and little resilience. Manila in the Philippines and Calcutta in India are also highly vulnerable largely because of their large populations and degree of expose to storms.
The European cities of Marseille and Rotterdam are also exposed to flood risks, with violent storms, high river levels and significant low-lying areas. But the cities are least vulnerable with good flood management infrastructure and tight building regulations for flood-prone areas, for example. "When a big flood hits you will still get flooding," says Professor Wright, "but these European cities will bounce back quickly."
The researchers also used their vulnerability index to assess how climate change would affect the vulnerability of these cities in the future. With sea levels predicted to rise over the next 100 years, the study found that Shanghai and Dhaka will remain the most vulnerable cities in 2100, although the vulnerability of all the cities will increase (doubled in the case of Manila).
"Our index provides a flexible tool for cities to explore how they are currently exposed to flooding and how this may change in the future. It will help them to prioritise their flood risk and resilience strategies," says Professor Wright.

Most teachers would agree that it is important that students remember much of what they read. Yet one of the most common sights on high school and college campuses across the land is that of students poring over textbooks, yellow marker in hand, highlighting pertinent passages?which often end up including most of the page. Later in the semester, to prepare for their exams, students hit the textbooks again, rereading the yellow blocks of text.
Studies have shown that highlighting and rereading text is among the least effective ways for students to remember the content of what they have read. A far better technique is for students to quiz themselves. In one study, students who read a text once and then tried to recall it on three occasions scored 50 percent higher on exams than students who read the text and then reread it three times. And yet many teachers persist in encouraging?or at least not discouraging?the techniques that science has proved to fall short.
This is just one symptom of a general failure to integrate scientific knowledge of the mind into schooling. Many commonly held ideas about education defy scientific principles of thinking and learning. For example, a common misconception is that teaching content is less important than teaching critical thinking skills or problem-solving strategies. Scientists have also long known that kids must be explicitly taught the connections between letters and sounds and that they benefit most when such instruction is planned and explicit. Yet some reading programs, even those used in large school districts, teach this information only if an instructor sees the need.
It is easy to argue that teachers ought to do a better job of keeping up with science, but teaching is already a labor-intensive profession. And it is difficult for the nonspecialist to separate scientific research from the usual flood of quackery and pseudoscience. Peddlers of expensive and supposedly research-based nostrums lobby school districts. Other products that may have scientific validity have not yet been thoroughly tested. For example, theories of mathematical learning suggest that linear (but not circular) board games may boost math preparedness in preschoolers, but the idea needs large-scale testing.
How are educators supposed to know which practices to use? An institution that vets research and summarizes it for educators could solve the problem. Medicine provides a precedent. Practicing physicians do not have the time to keep up with the tens of thousands of research articles published annually that might suggest a change in treatment. Instead they rely on reputable summaries of research, published annually, that draw conclusions as to whether the accumulated evidence merits a change in medical practice. Teachers have nothing like these authoritative reviews. They are on their own.
The U.S. Department of Education has, in the past, tried to bring some scientific rigor to teaching. The What Works Clearinghouse, created in 2002 by the DOE's Institute of Education Sciences, evaluates classroom curricula, programs and materials, but its standards of evidence are overly stringent, and teachers play no role in the vetting process. Teachers also play no role in the evaluation, and their participation is crucial. Researchers can evaluate research, but teachers understand education. The purpose of this institution would be to produce information that can be used to shape teaching and learning.
It is also important that insights provided by a clearinghouse come from basic science. Many teachers, for instance, need to be disabused of the notions children have different ?learning styles? and that boys' brains are hardwired to be better at spatial tasks than girls'. This job of bringing accurate scientific information about thinking and learning to teachers might arguably fall to schools of education, states, districts and teachers' professional organizations, but these institutions have shown little interest in the job. A neutral national review board would be the simplest and quickest answer to a problem that is a big obstacle to broad improvement across many schools.

The Sunday before I left to fly back to Botswana, my family threw me a ?Welcome Home? party so that I could see everyone I love in one place at one time. I couldn?t have planned a more beautiful party; the weather was warm and breezy, the volleyball net was busy all afternoon, endless amounts of food was eaten and/or sent home with guests in mass amounts, and the last to leave departed around midnight. All in all, a perfect day!
Momma Murph, the hostess with the mostest!
Two generations of sisters
Laura lovingly put Avery in a shirt that said "my auntie is the best". True, I'd say :)
Elyse, my best (and greatest) friend
Aside from catching up with friends I haven?t seen in 10 months, it was heartwarming to see people show up who I haven?t seen in years. I was touched that so many people took time out of their lives to spend the day with us. It was an exhausting day of trying to paint the most accurate picture of my life and work in Botswana with just a few sentences; it?s hard to explain exactly how the pros and cons balance themselves out.
With the May family, who I've been working for/growing up with for 10 years now
My dad's side of the family; so thankful (and proud) that my cousin Sean could take time out of his busy schedule working for the Obama administration to spend the afternoon with me!
I hope that, despite the challenges all of us here face, it doesn?t come across as though I?m down more times than up. In all reality, as clich? as it may sound, your service is exactly what you make of it. I strive every day to see the world in a positive light, and although I can easily get caught up in the frustration of living as a white woman in the culture of Botswana, I really am glad I made this commitment and I will see it through to fruition. It?s not at all what I expected when I signed up for the Peace Corps, but living here has taught me more about myself than I ever could have learned at home.
I?d also like to take a moment to recognize my church family at GreenTreeChurch of the Brethren, all of whom I got to visit on Sunday morning before my party. I?ve said many times before that for me, church is about community? but Green Tree is much, much more than simply a community. They have become my family, and not a week has gone by since I?ve been here that I haven?t received a letter, package, email or prayer by someone there. I could sense the encouragement as soon as I walked in the door, and by the time I had to duck out early to prepare for my party, I was overwhelmed with emotions. I won?t go into my beliefs on religion on this blog, because I don?t think this is the proper avenue for it, but I will say that my thoughts about faith, just like my thoughts on what I want to do when I finish the Peace Corps, change nearly every day. I?ve wavered from one extreme to the other in my short life, and I know that I will continue to do so as I grow. What?s most beautiful to me about Green Tree is the tenderness with which they approach my fickle mind; they don?t evangelize or worry about the details of what I believe, they simply let me be in my wonder and questions, and provide guidance only when asked for it. Environments like that are hard to come by in this day and age, and I don?t take it for granted.My experience getting back to Botswana was a rocky one to say the least. My original flight was with United Airways from Philadelphia to DC, then a connecting flight from DC straight to Johannesburg, South Africa. Unfortunately the day I was supposed to fly out was riddled with thunder & lightening storms, and after being delayed 4 hours my flight to DC was eventually cancelled altogether. I patiently waited in line to re-book an entirely new flight, which ended up being with US Airways and containing a 12-hour layover in Frankfurt, Germany (which I excitedly took advantage of and spent the day touring). I?ll spare you the gritty details, but the (very nice) agents informed me that US Airways in fact only covers one checked bag, not two like United, and I would have to pay an additional $100 to check the second. I did some running back and forth between the carriers, dealing with the most polite agents who I honestly believed wanted to help, but it was out of their control. Finally, feeling beaten down and defeated, I stepped away as the flood of emotions that had been building up after having to say goodbye to my family for the second time in a year came exploding out of me in a steady stream of tears. I just couldn?t get myself together, and as I was hyperventilating a very sweet woman approached me hesitantly, asking if there was anything she could do to help. I said no, thank you, but I could handle it once I calmed myself down. She mentioned that she had overheard my phone conversations with my mom, as well as watching me fight with the US Airways agents, and she insisted that I allow her to pay the $100 fee for my second bag. Going on to explain that she had friends who were former Peace Corps Volunteers, and she knows what life is like for us, she was adamant that I let her do it. At this, my eyes welled up again and my tears sparked a few from her, which we both laughed about as we walked over to the counter.
I only write about this interaction because it came at a time where I was very unsure of returning to Botswana; I?d had such a great experience being surrounded by family and friends again, and I felt like sign after sign kept directing me to stay in America on Tuesday. I was doubting myself and whether or not I had another year of this in me, whether or not it would break me. Meeting this woman was, at least in my opinion, the ultimate sign. She represents the altruism and genuine humanity that still exists among us; qualities that I had let become overshadowed by greed and convenience. She brought me back to why I signed up for the Peace Corps to begin with. Her only request, when I asked for her address to send a thank-you card, was that I pay it forward.

WOLFEBORO, N.H. (AP) ? President Barack Obama and Republican challenger Mitt Romney spent a quiet Sunday attending church with their families, resting up for the campaign's final 11 weeks and the approaching party nominating conventions.
While the Romneys enjoyed beautiful sunshine in New Hampshire, and the Obamas endured rain in Washington, both men sent top advisers to the Sunday talk shows. These surrogates sparred mainly over Medicare and taxes, just as the candidates themselves have done for days.
Obama and Romney plunge back into heavy campaigning and fundraising this week. Targeted states include Ohio, Nevada and New Hampshire.
The debate's dominant topic remains how to tame Medicare's explosive growth without hurting the millions of elderly Americans, and future retirees, who count on it to pay for health care.
TV interviewers pressed Romney aides to explain how the GOP ticket can restore a proposed $716 billion cut in Medicare spending's growth over 10 years without worsening the program's projected shortfall in funding. Moderators also noted that Romney's running mate, House Budget Committee Chairman Paul Ryan of Wisconsin, originally joined Obama in backing the proposed $716 billion, 10-year reduction.
Romney adviser Eric Fehrnstrom told CNN's "State of the Union" that Ryan and Romney are now in accord. The $716 billion can safely remain in the program, he said, because Romney will "introduce choice and competition through more private plans."
Romney also would trim benefits for wealthier people and gradually raise the eligibility age. None of his proposed changes would affect Americans now 55 or older.
Obama aide Stephanie Cutter, also on CNN, said Romney's plan to keep the $716 billion in Medicare over 10 years would do nothing to shore up the program.
"They're going to use taxpayer dollars to give subsidies to insurance companies," she said.
Obama's proposed reductions would not hurt Medicare recipients, Cutter said, because he would create incentives for health providers to be more efficient.
On "Fox News Sunday," Republican adviser Ed Gillespie was asked about a nonpartisan Congressional Budget Office finding that under Romney's "premium support" proposals, "Medicare beneficiaries will bear a much larger share of their health care cost."
"We reject that in our analysis," Gillespie said. He said Romney's overall plans, including a higher eligibility age, eventually would slow the program's growth.
On another front, Gillespie disputed Obama's claim that Romney's call for deeper tax cuts will unfairly benefit the wealthy and worsen the deficit.
Romney's plan, Gillespie said, "would allow for households with incomes less than $200,000 to not pay on capital gains and dividends, because we believe that would help foster job creation."
Obama, his wife and their two daughters attended services at St. John's Episcopal Church, across the street from the White House.
The president plans to campaign Tuesday in Ohio, and Wednesday in Nevada and New York.
Romney attended the Mormon church in Wolfeboro, N.H. ? where he has a summer home ? with his wife, Ann, and six of their grandchildren. The children's parents, Tagg and Jennifer Romney, also attended.
One grandson, Johnny, spent much of service seated on his grandmother's lap ? and a briefer time on his grandfather's lap ? quietly paging through children's picture books.
The churchgoers, accustomed to seeing the Romneys here in summer months, paid no special attention to the family. No one from the pulpit mentioned their presence.
Romney and Ryan plan to talk with voters Monday in Manchester, N.H. Romney then will fly to New Orleans for a fundraiser.
Teasing your customers about forthcoming software updates isn't very nice -- unless you deliver on the very same day, of course. ASUS hinted, just this morning, that Jelly Bean might be on its way to some of its devices via the company's Facebook page. Now, we're getting reports from Transformer Pad TF300 owners that the update has landed. ASUS was even kind enough to beat its own estimate (for the TF300, at least) by a significant measure. Could this mean the TF700 update is on its way? Our advice? Keep mashing that "Check now" just to make sure.

TAMPA --
The national economic slowdown has caught up with Florida, helping raise its unemployment rate for the first time in more than a year.
Florida's jobless rate rose to 8.8 percent in July, up from 8.6 percent in June, according to new numbers Friday from the state Department of Economic Opportunity. That translates into 816,000 unemployed Floridians out of a labor force of about 9.3 million.
The Sunshine State's unemployment rate had been improving for most of the past year, but things have gone downhill since May. The unemployment rate went flat over the past two months and finally crept up in July ? the first increase since June 2011.
The weak labor market could take on greater significance as the Republican Party gears up for its national convention in Tampa in nine days.
Presumptive GOP nominee Mitt Romney is certain to make the economy and the politics of the Obama administration topics of debate.
Meanwhile, Gov. Rick Scott, a Republican who won election on a promise to create jobs, tried to make the best of a disappointing economic report.
The governor was in Tampa on Friday to welcome the expansion of StreetLinks Lender Solutions, a company that serves the mortgage industry and expects to add 300 people in East Tampa over three years.
"Month-to-month numbers are going to vary, but the long-term trend is positive," said Lane Wright, the governor's press secretary.
"The underlying economic data is extremely encouraging. Florida is moving in the right direction."
In fact, while the jobless rate rose in July, the new rate of 8.8 percent is still down significantly from July 2011 when it stood at 10.6 percent. By comparison, the nation's overall unemployment rate was 8.3 percent in July.

Closer to home, the Tampa region's jobless rate rose to 9.4 percent last month from 9 percent in June. Regional unemployment figures can jump wildly from month to month, because they're not adjusted for seasonal fluctuations.
Economists in Florida weren't surprised Friday. Forty-four states recorded unemployment rate increases in July, the federal Bureau of Labor Statistics said.
Sean Snaith, an economist at the University of Central Florida, said America's economy grew by 4.1 percent in the fall, but has since slowed to a weak 1.5 percent.
"This is a pretty hard application of the brakes, as far as growth is concerned," Snaith said.
Part of the problem is that businesses nationwide are nervous about the future and aren't willing to hire anyone right now, said Scott Brown, an economist with Raymond James Financial.

The presidential election is just a few months off, and by the end of this year, big tax cuts on incomes and payroll taxes will come to an end, Brown said. It's not clear if Congress will renew them, and some worry that the economy will slip back into recession if Congress doesn't act.
Scott may start feeling some heat if Florida's situation doesn't improve, even if the rest of the country is struggling, too. During his run for governor, Scott vowed to create 700,000 jobs over seven years.
So far, Florida has added about 114,000 jobs in his 20 months in office.
Lance deHaven-Smith, a political science professor at Florida State University, said no single policymaker has that much influence over the economy. Still, if Scott can't show good progress toward that 700,000-job promise, it may haunt him when he runs for re-election.
"If he's way off of it, it will be a liability," deHaven-Smith said. "Whoever's running against him will hammer him."
Do you believe in dog? is a brand new blog. It is written by two dog researchers, one in New York City, the other in Yarra Valley just outside of Melbourne, Australia. Julie Hecht you may already know from her wonderful blog Dog Spies, her writing in The Bark, or her research which we covered here at SciAm. She studies (and teaches about) dog cognition. Mia Cobb, the Australian, did her research in animal behavior on birds and ants, but now works on issues of dog shelters, welfare and performance science of working dogs. What is the coolest thing about the blog is that the two of them write for each other, addressing each other in each post, thus teaching and learning from each other in a dialogue to which we are all invited to participate in and contribute.

Tales from the OR by Summer Ash:
WARNING: This post contains my blood and guts, literally. If you re squeamish, I recommend skipping this one. What follows is my journey through the operating room at Columbia-Presbyterian on July 18, 2012. Apologies, but I couldn t help starting off with yet another pop culture reference (this time from Wes Anderson s Rushmore)?.
An example of why it is important to distinguish evolution as fact, theory, and path. by T. Ryan Gregory:
I, and others, have pointed out that there are three aspects of evolution: evolution as fact, evolution as theory, and evolution as path. Evolution as fact refers to the historical reality that species are related through common ancestry. This is supported by a massive amount of evidence from a wide array of independent sources. Evolution as theory refers to the proposed explanations for how descent with modification occurs mutation, natural selection, genetic drift, etc. Evolution as path refers to the actual patterns that have occurred during the history of life, such as when certain events (e.g., branching points, extinctions, etc.) took place, how lineages are related, when and how many times certain traits evolved, and such. The important point is that these three components are largely independent?
The Childhood Aquatic by John Romano:
There is a structurally integral part of my psyche that is the keystone to my existence. I am not sure how it was placed in such a vital position, but it seems this part of me is embedded in my DNA. Something that I can never remember being without. The absolute and total fascination with the natural world?.
Abraham Lincoln and The Embalmer by Romeo Vitelli:
The assassination of Abraham Lincoln on April 15, 1865 shocked a nation still recovering from four years of bloody civil war. Along with the hunt for his killers and the uncovering of the assassination plot against the President and several other members of his administration, there was also the logistic nightmare of his funeral and the need to transport the President?s body by train from Washington D.C. to his final resting place in Springfield, Illinois. Since the funeral train would retrace the route that Lincoln had traveled to Washington following his election, the body would be viewed by millions of mourners along the way during the numerous planned stops. All of which raised the question of how to keep the body preserved long enough to reach its destination. Considering the fact that funeral embalming was a relatively new development at that time, some very special arrangements needed to be made?
Inspiration from bassist Victor Wooten shows me a new way to deal with my child-as-scientist frustrations by Marie-Claire Shanahan:
I have a confession to make: I cringe a little every time I see a school science or science outreach program justified by saying something like, Young children are natural scientists, truly curious about the world (That particular quote is from the Delaware Museum of Natural History). I feel like a curmudgeon about it because it often comes with really good intentions to get students actively involved in doing science (something I definitely support)?.
How a Tick Bite Made Me Allergic to Meat by Helen Chappell:
The last time I ate a hamburger, I spent the night in the emergency room. There wasn t anything wrong with the hamburger itself aside from being a bit overdone but it sent me into anaphylactic shock. It wasn t always this way?
Are wolves really all that? by DeLene Beeland:
Have conservation scientists become carried away, touting the ecological benefits of wolves where there are perhaps dare I say it? not as many as we believe there to be? Perhaps some people in the media, and even some in science, have gotten carried away with the ecological changes that wolves are actually capable of mediating, says globally-renowned wolf biologist L. David Mech in his most recent paper Is science in danger of sanctifying the wolf? ?
Losing One s Head: A Frustrating Search for the Truth about Decapitation by Lindsey Fitzharris:
If you ever find yourself in a pub with me, chances are that at some point, the conversation will turn to death. Not just death, but the terrifying and horrible ways people have succumbed to it in the past. I have often heard a story retold about a man who attended the execution of his friend during the French Revolution. Seconds after the guillotine fell, the man retrieved the severed head and asked it a series of questions in order to determine whether or not it was possible to retain consciousness after decapitation. Through a system of blinking, the victim allegedly communicated his message back to his friend. The ending to this story changes according to the whims of the narrator or perhaps the number of drinks he or she has consumed by that time. I wondered: was this the 18th-century equivalent to an urban legend? Or could there, in fact, be a degree of truth in this ghastly tale??.
A Dirty, Deadly Bite by Brian Switek:
Dragons aren t real. At least, the fire-breathing wyverns and coiling wyrms of medieval lore aren t. Those reptilian menaces were products of superstition and pre-scientific ideas about prehistoric creatures. They were ugly amalgamations inspired by our fears and actual fossil remains of long-extinct mammals and dinosaurs. But in the early 20th century, reporters excitedly relayed the discovery of what quickly became known as the Komodo dragon ten foot long lizards that had coexisted with humans on South Pacific islands for thousands of years, but had only just been recognized by western science?.
The Itsy Bitsy Drummer by Helen Shen:
Rrrr RRR Thack! Thack! Thrusting his front legs skyward, the male jumping spider shakes his rear end to send thumps, scrapes, and buzzes through the ground. He s playing for a female s attention, dazzling her eight eyes with semaphore while drumming out seductive seismic signals. A few missteps could turn the spider s performance into a dinner show with the star as the main dish. The ferocious female demands precise choreography, set to a groovy beat that UC Berkeley behavioral ecologist Damian Elias is working to decipher?.
