Summer's back!
Kinda. The "500 Days of Summer" costars have reunited on screen, except this time, instead of going through an emotional rollercoaster, Zooey Deschanel and Joseph Gordon-Levitt sing a sweet tune together.
The darling duo, looking casual and comfortable, sit in front of the camera with ukulele and guitar, ready to give us a mini performance. And we'll tell you right now, our hearts melted.

Deschanel kicks off their cover of jazz singer Nancy Wilson's, "What Are You Doing New Year's Eve?" with her hypnotizing voice, which is soon followed by Gordon-Levitt sharing his singing chops (which only makes him that much sexier).
She & Him's female half posted the video on her website HelloGiggles, and wrote, "I have known Joe Gordon-Levitt for going on 12 years. We first met in the summer of 2000 while doing a tiny movie called Manic, where we bonded over a mutual appreciation for Harry Nilsson and Nina Simone and I have been lucky enough to call him one of my dearest friends ever since.
"When we did '500 Days of Summer' 8 years later, we spent every lunch hour dancing to Marvin Gaye in the hair and makeup trailer; we had loads of fun. I hope to do a thousand more movies with him because he's simply the best. But in the meantime, we made a little New Year's duet for all of you! The original?by Nancy Wilson. ENJOY! Don't forget to check out Joe's website http://hitrecord.org/"
We know 'New Girl' star Zooey just separated from her hubby?and who knows what J.G.L is up to with the ladies?these days, but deep inside, we kinda (and by kinda we mean really) hope that one day we'll write a "new couple alert" story on these two.

We are bad hands of society, tied to the same fate.
Hope you don't mind a little red on those shoes.
Once, we were blind. We heard the devils arrive, heard them ravage and plunder and eat their fill, but you'd be lucky to catch hair, club, or third eye of them. They're crafty beasts. They got a few eras' worth of experience behind 'em, and all logic says they've got the upper hand. You start panicking. It's natural.
Ever invited a demon into your home? Not voluntarily, at least. But they're persistent creatures; they have their awkward methods of socializing, and they do enjoy tea with their flesh. You need to take action, but the samurai wanderin' ain't so noble no more. You want to play the village hero, but your blade is "broken," conveniently enough. So you call the Demon Queller, of course?you call Shoki. And Shoki takes his big ole boomin' voice, waves that sword round, and your demon infestation is naught more but cause for boys' festivals.
Shoki was special, see. He was also uglier than shit. He got evil on his side, turned it good. The yokai, as the demons were called, behaved themselves. They say the Demon Queller is reincarnated every hundred years or so, and our current savior just so happens to be a woman who, not knowing any better, gave her heart to a devil. A real troubled fellow. He heads the yakuza, just a bunch of men who get their kicks from racketeering, gambling, extortion, real gangster stuff. No big deal.
Once, we were blind, but you'd be hard pressed to miss the creatures of myth in this day. The yakuza? They got a whole lot of them in their ranks, became one family in the process. It's been about half a century of peace?nail-bitingly unstable peace, but peace no less. As stories go, however, things gotta change. And in this case, change can be a scary, violent thing.
This is a large project, and because my first GM'ing experience was marred by the absence of a friend, I'd adore having someone to help plot and keep track of things. I apologize if this seems a bit vague; I've a wealth of information I'm setting up for people unfamiliar with the folklore, so consider this an abridged version of what to come. Comments, questions, send 'em all in. I'd be ecstatic to hear from at least one of you.
Happy holidays~ Hope you'd like to spend your new year with the losers.

Park BW et al. ? The present study demonstrated that long?term breast cancer survivors had a significantly lower level of unmet needs than patients with survival duration of less than 3 years after surgery and patients with survival duration of less than 1 year since surgery suffered the greatest unmet needs. Quality of life (QOL) might be enhanced if interventions are made for specific unmet needs of each patient group.

A walk-on running back; a dad who couldn't tell his kids what he did; a fat kid who started going to the gym and never stopped. A guy who came to know his sport's greatest venue in ways some champions never will. The top man at sports video gaming's dominant publisher, and a college student who considers himself a "virtual athlete," watching every out from his wheelchair.
Stick Jockey, the sports video game column of Kotaku, brought to you more than four dozen stories in 2011 of those who play video games, those who make them, and all who are fans. These are my 10 most favorite.
Twenty years after its Christmastime release, Tecmo Super Bowl, the progenitor of modern simulation sports gaming, still runs strong. Tecmo Super Bowl retains not only a simplicity of design but simplicity of play. Or at least its illusion. "Everybody who played this game as a kid thought they were the best at it," said Wisconsin attorney Chet Holzbauer. "Everyone has a group of friends that, if they were the best in that group, they thought there was no way anyone else could be better than them."
The Rest of the Story: Holzbauer runs the Madison Tecmo Tournament, what is likely the largest Tecmo Super Bowl tournament in the world. Scheduled for March 3, it has already maxed out its 128-player field and is accepting registrants for alternate slots should any of them drop out. Matt Knobbe's TecmoBowl.org remains current with the modern game, publishing modified rosters and cutting Tecmo-ized highlights of current players and their feats. This sweet Tecmo Tim Tebow shirt can be yours for $18. More ?
Following the most decorated entry in a widely acclaimed series, NBA 2K12 released under the cloud of a lockout that stretched to five months before the league's players and owners reached a new labor agreement. The work stoppage pinched the game's "NBA Today" mode, as well as the inclusion of rookies, whose absence was most glaring from features like the "My Player" career mode. 2K Sports soldiered on, and the cloud lifted on Nov. 27.
The Rest of the Story: The NBA tips off with five games tomorrow, and NBA 2K12 rebooted some of its promotional efforts to capture enthusiasm for basketball's return. You can see simulations of all five season openers here. Tomorrow, NBA 2K12 producer Erick Boenisch will be in Oakland to see the Golden State Warriors take on Chris Paul and the new-look Los Angeles Clippers; Jason Argent, 2K Sports' vice president of marketing, will sneak away from his mom's Palm Springs home to wsee the Lakers play the Bulls/

The spasms caused by major conferences' realignment provided endless water cooler and talk radio fodder for college football fans. EA Sports' Ben Haumiller has taken every development with the curiosity and intrigue of a diehard college football fan, and the headache and worry of someone whose job is made easier by league stability. Haumiller's helming NCAA Football 13, which may yet have to account for a 22-team superconference, and could also see 11th-hour changes to the membership of the Big East and Big 12. "Every time Joe Schad at ESPN reports this team is moving to this conference, this really means we've got more work to do," Haumiller said. "It's not just the part of your brain that goes, as a college football fan, hey, that's interesting. You're also thinking, alright, gotta write that down and get started on it as soon as possible."
The Rest of the Story: There are no profound developments in conference realignment yet, leaving the proposed Mountain West/Conference USA alliance up in the air, as well as West Virginia's departure for the Big 12, which is the subject of a lawsuit. Haumiller, a Florida State alumnus, was on the sideline at Doak Campbell Stadium for this year's No. 1 vs. No. 5 matchup of Oklahoma and Florida State, both as a fan and in a professional capacity (gathering audio for use in NCAA 13. At E3, he routed Snoop Dogg head to head in a matchup of Oregon vs. USC. More ?
A veil of secrecy kept the reveal of NFL Blitz an almost perfect October surprise for EA Sports. For 18 months, producer Jeff Ross couldn't even tell his kids what he was working on, lest one of them say something to a friend at school and word spread to the Internet. The game was originally submitted to the ESRB under the fictitious title "Madden Playbook Creator" to avoid suspicion.
The Rest of the Story: Blitz is on track for a Jan 4 release on Xbox Live and PlayStation Network. Unfortunately, the NFL clamped down on some features that gamers remembered from Blitz's earlier incarnations, such as late hits. Still, Ross promises that the game will still deliver "over-the-top, fast arcade action with big hits and guys catching on fire" when it arrives. More ?
Earlier this year, a dozen veterans of EA Sports' Tiburon studio, including its former general manager, reunited elsewhere to form Row Sham Bow, a new studio dedicated to making a Facebook game called Woodland Heroes. It was quite a departure from their previous assignment, which for many had been working on the Madden NFL franchise. "When we started building the game, we didn't talk about the demographic or the target audience; over the course of the design, we talked about what we wanted to play," said Ian Cummings, formerly Madden's creative director.
The Rest of the Story: Woodland Heroes has been a critical success, winning Gamasutra's best social game of 2011. "It is a great feeling to have our peers and fans alike recognize the work that we've done so far and the direction we are trying to go, even when we feel like we are just starting to figure out how the hell this crazy social game industry works," Cummings said. While his time with Madden still is fondly recalled, Cummings says he has "really enjoyed an extra sense of relaxation on Sundays, being able to watch every NFL game at home at my own leisure without having to take any notes." After four years as the president of sports video gaming's heavyweight label, Peter Moore moved on to higher office within Electronic Arts, leaving EA Sports' big chairto Andrew Wilson, the label's chief of development before ascending to the top job. "He becomes a voice of the gamer, when he speaks to the development team," Moore said. "And the unique advantage Andrew Wilson has coming into this job, is his development background. He can sit down with producers, with developers, with network engineers and know exactly what they do and what they face on a daily basis."
The Rest of the Story: Moore left Wilson more than the keys to a nice sports bar. Three of the label's top franchises, Madden, FIFA and NHL all set sales records soon after their release. Wilson's first full year will see a highly anticipated reboot of SSX in February and, as 2K Sports' exclusive license with Major League Baseball expires that year, potentially news on that front as well. Two college pals who were formerly scrawny and chubby gamers before buckling down and hitting the gym had no idea of the response they would get when they developed a web site that made working out into a type of role-playing game. Their brainchild, Fitocracy, scores users' workouts in a manner similar to leveling up in an MMO. "I actually don't treat life any differently than an RPG," said Fitocracy co-founder Brian Wang, who grew up as a skinny kid playing Chrono Trigger. "I'm always thinking of leveling up myself, which in this case, is actually myself, not my World of Warcraft character."
The Rest of the Story: Fitocracy's user base has continued to climb, thanks to recognition from webcomics like XKCD and Penny Arcade and mainstream outlets like The New York Times and CNN. Membership still is on an invitation-only basis as the site remains in beta. But it has added a premium "Hero" membership level offering additional workout routines, easily copying friends' workouts, early access to new features, and other perks. More ?
Seven years after walking on to the Auburn team as a freshman, Alex Howell now is in charge of NCAA Football's "Road to Glory," a career mode that emulates some of what he experienced as a college football player. Self-described as "the biggest JRPG nerd," Howell overhauled RTG with RPG elements, including a "Coach Trust" system that sought to cement the relationship of a star player to the man who recruited him, and whose livelihood depends on his success.
The Rest of the Story: Road to Glory made strides under Howell's design but still has some ground to cover before becoming a truly compelling experience. "RTG is coming along better than last year thanks to the huge consumer feedback we have received," Howell said. "I'm listening to our fans and putting inmany requests they've asked for." His first year of work at EA Sports also saw him credited with ESPN's College GameDay in work on their "Virtual Playbook," which in years past has been nominated for an Emmy. "Looking forward to another amazing year at Tiburon," Alex says.

A four-day pass to The Masters Tournament is truly a bucket-list item, one any golfer would consider himself fortunate to have, if only once. Shannon Yates, an environmental artist for EA Sports, got to spend 10 days, sunup to sundown, on Augusta National's fabled golf course, coming to know its beauty and its challenge in ways even that tournament's champions may not know. Brought to high-definition video gaming for the first time, Tiger Woods PGA Tour 12: The Masters delivered a painstakingly authentic rendering of the course, thanks to the scanning Yates and his team performed over a week and half in August 2010. "We spent two full days on Amen Corner," Yates said. "When we crested the hill on No. 11, I remember talking to the assistants gathered at the scanner, and saying ?We have to get all of this exactly right. We will scan this as many times as we have to, to get this right."
The Rest of the Story: Yates' game easily came home as Stick Jockey's Sports Video Game of the Year, thanks as much to its technical achievement as to new gameplay features incorporated within it. The project has moved to a March release window now, to hit shelves before The Masters tees off in April. Yates himself is back on the job, but did take some time off after the game's release for an annual trip down the Florida coast aboard his Harley-Davidson. More ?
A decade before most boys grapple with the reality they aren't ever going to make the majors, Hans Smith had to come to terms with the fact he'd never even step foot on the diamond. A video game changed all of that. MLB The Show and its "Road to the Show" career mode provided more than a diversion to the 25-year-old college student with cerebral palsy. It made him into, in his words, a "virtual athlete." Sony San Diego, the makers of the game, were so touched by his dedication that they included, at his request, a new control set to include gamers of all levels of ability.
The Rest of the Story: MLB 11 The Show shipped with "ADVA Settings," named for the Association of Disabled Virtual Athletes that Smith created for a course project at Boise State University. The control set allowed gamers with limited motor function the ability to play not just the single player modes, but also in multiplayer modes against competitors using other control sets. Though the ADVA is inactive as of now, Smith and his story went to numerous mainstream outlets, including The New York Times, as a heartwarming example of cooperation among those who love The National Pastime. "We do get plenty of emails, fan mail, requests, to add feature XYZ to The Show," said Kolbe Launchbaugh, a senior designer on the game. "Nothing really compares to the passion and honesty behind the words that Hans sent us. He thanked us for making the game, and he thanked us for giving him an experience he could not have had in real life More ?

A woman's lung cancer risk doesn't appear to be linked to the number of children she has, although some scientists had thought hormonal changes during pregnancy might protect against the disease.
That's according to a new report that sums up 16 previous studies on the topic, which researchers have explored to get a better understanding of lung cancer and possible treatments.
If lung cancer in women were tied to hormones the same way some breast cancers are, for instance, similar drugs might be effective against both diseases, said Jessica K. Paulus, who worked on the analysis.
So far, however, studies haven't agreed on whether or not pregnancies -- and by extension hormones -- play a role in lung cancer. . . .
The disease is rare in younger adults, but becomes more common as people grow old. Overall, the risk of getting lung cancer is about one in 13 for men and one in 16 for women. But these overall numbers include smokers, whose risk is many times higher than that of non-smokers.
"Both active smoking and exposure to second-hand smoking are some of the strongest risk factors for lung cancer," said Paulus. "Quitting smoking and quitting soon is associated with reducing your risk of lung cancer."

Members of the Mexican army escort Felipe Cabrera Sarabia on Monday in Mexico City.
STORY HIGHLIGHTS
(CNN) -- Mexican army special forces have arrested a top lieutenant for alleged drug kingpin Joaquin "El Chapo" Guzman, the Defense Ministry said Monday.
Troops arrested Felipe Cabrera Sarabia on Friday in "a surgical operation in Cuiliacan" in the northwestern state of Sinaloa, said Ricardo Trevilla Trejo, a Defense Ministry spokesman.
Cabrera, who was responsible for the activities of the Pacific Cartel in Durango and the southern part of the state of Chihuahua, was detained after fleeing from Durango, Trevilla told reporters.
"The analysis of his behavior permitted (us) to find the building where he was hiding" and Cabrera was taken into custody without violence, Trevilla said. Firearms, computer equipment and other documentation were seized, too, he said.
Cabrera, who appeared Monday in the office of a prosecutor who specializes in organized crime, was responsible for Guzman's security in Durango, the state-run Notimex news agency said.
He is charged with possessing firearms reserved for use by the army and falsification of a public document, a spokeswoman for the attorney general said.
Trevilla said Cabrera was involved in kidnappings, extortion and arson.
"The violence caused him to rise within the organization," said Trevilla, who predicted that the arrest will affect the cartel's leadership and abilities.
Guzman, who is under indictment by U.S. authorities in Chicago, New York and Los Angeles, is described by the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration as one of "the most powerful drug traffickers in Mexico." In 2004, the U.S. government announced a $5 million reward for information leading to his arrest and conviction.
He is accused of running a major network that distributes cocaine and heroin.
He is worth about $1 billion, according to Forbes Magazine, which began listing him on its billionaires list in 2009. The magazine lists him as No. 55 on its Most Powerful People list and as the only crime lord on its list of Mexico's billionaires.

STAMFORD, Conn. (AP) ? Fire swept through an advertising executive's Victorian home along the Connecticut shoreline, killing her three children and her parents.
Madonna Badger and a male acquaintance were able to escape from the house as it was engulfed by flames on Christmas morning, Stamford police Sgt. Paul Guzda said. But Badger's three daughters ? a 10-year-old and 7-year-old twins ? died in the fire, Guzda said.
He said Badger's parents, who were visiting for the holiday, also died in the blaze.
Neighbors said they awoke to the sound of screaming shortly before 5 a.m. and rushed outside to help, but they could only watch in horror as flames devoured the grand home and the shocked, injured survivors were led away from the house.
Badger, an ad executive in the fashion industry, is the founder of New York City-based Badger & Winters Group. A supervisor at Stamford Hospital said she was treated and discharged by Sunday evening.
Property records show she bought the five-bedroom, waterfront home for $1.7 million last year. The house is situated in Shippan Point, a wealthy neighborhood that juts into Long Island Sound.
The male acquaintance who also escaped the blaze was a contractor who was doing work on the home, Guzda said. He was also hospitalized but his condition was not released.
"It is a terrible, terrible day," Mayor Michael Pavia told reporters at the scene of the fire. "There probably has not been a worse Christmas day in the city of Stamford."
Police officers drove Badger's husband, Matthew Badger, from New York City to Stamford on Sunday morning. Badger's parents lived in Southbury, Conn., Guzda said.
Firefighters knew there were other people in the home but could not get to them because the flames were too large and the heat too intense, said Acting Fire Chief Antonio Conte, his voice cracking with emotion.
"It's never easy. That's for sure," he said. "I've been on this job 38 years ... not an easy day."
Conte said fire officials don't yet know the cause of the blaze and likely would not get clues for a few days until fire marshals can enter the structure and examine it.
By Sunday evening, the roof of the blackened house had largely collapsed.
A neighbor, Sam Cingari Jr., said he was awakened by the sound of screaming and saw that the house was engulfed by flames.
"We heard this screaming at 5 in the morning," he said. "The whole house was ablaze and I mean ablaze."
Cingari said he did not know his neighbors, who he said bought the house last year and were renovating it.
Charles Mangano, who lives nearby, said his wife woke him up and alerted him to the fire. He ran outside to see if he could help and saw a number of fire trucks in front of the house.
"I heard someone yell 'Help, help, help me!' and I started sprinting up my driveway," Mangano told The Advocate of Stamford.
He told the newspaper he saw a barefoot man wearing boxers and a woman being taken out of the house. The outdoor temperature at the time was below freezing, according to the National Weather Service.
The woman said, "My whole life is in there," Mangano said. "They were both obviously in a state of shock."
Stamford, a city of 117,000 residents, is about 25 miles northeast of New York City.
Badger was the creative mind behind major advertising campaigns for leading fashion brands, including the iconic Marky Mark underwear ads for Calvin Klein.
Raised in Kentucky, Badger began her career working as a graphic designer in the art department of Esquire magazine. Before starting her own company, she worked as an art director for several magazines and CRK, the in-house advertising agency for designer Calvin Klein.
Badger & Winters has worked with Proctor & Gamble, CoverGirl, A/X Armani Exchange, Emanuel Ungaro and Vera Wang, among other high-profile corporations. The company did not immediately respond to a request for comment Sunday.

The nation's most active weather feature Sunday will be prompted by a low pressure system moving over the Gulf of Mexico. This storm will produce widespread rain from eastern Texas through Alabama. A mix of rain and snow cannot be ruled out in the cold air over and eastern New Mexico in the afternoon and evening.
Elsewhere, a Pacific storm will slam into the Northwest sometime Sunday afternoon or evening, producing rain and high-elevation snow in what has been a very dry month for the West Coast. This precipitation will struggle to make its way into the intermountain West, but a few snow showers are possible in Idaho into Monday.
In the East, a cold storm will move into the upper Midwest and Northeast, but it won't be a rainmaker. Instead, it will act to cool temperatures to below normal into Monday though some snow in the region can't be ruled out.
Temperatures in the Northeast will rise into the 20s and 30s, while the Southeast will see 60s and 70s. Readings in the upper Midwest will rise into the 30s and 40s, while the Northwest will see temperatures in the 30s and 40s. The Southwest will rise into the 60s and some 70s.
Temperatures in the lower 48 states Saturday ranged from a morning low of minus 20 degrees in West Yellowstone, Montana, to a high of 82 degrees in Tampa, Fla.

SOUTHAVEN, MS-
(WMC-TV) - Southaven Mayor Greg Davis revealed Friday that he is gay after aldermen found he used taxpayer money at an adult store.
Davis told the Commercial Appeal he is gay after the paper reported he spent $67 in city money at a gay sex shop in Canada.
Davis is currently under an order by the state auditor to pay back $170,000 in questionable expenditures.? The Mississippi State Auditor's Office confirmed to Action News 5 that Davis made a purchase at the sex shop while on a business trip.
While Southaven alderman Greg Guy remains concerned about the ongoing investigation into the mayor's spending habits, he said Davis' personal life is none of his business.
"People have different perceptions of family values and what not," said Guy.? "I'm just not into personally judging people.? It's not my place.? The Bible says judge not lest you be judged."
Davis ran for Congress in 2008 as a conservative Republican.
Guy believes the mayor's revelation could affect him politically.? He and other aldermen have until Tuesday to examine the mayor's receipts themselves.
Davis did not respond to Action News 5's phone calls Friday.? He has already said he plans to run for reelection next year as Southaven's mayor.

Smoking is a well-known risk factor for lung cancer, but nearly 25% of all lung cancer patients have never smoked. In a study published online today in Genome Research (www.genome.org), researchers have identified a previously unknown gene fusion event that could explain a significant proportion of lung cancer cases in never-smokers, and might serve as a target for new therapies.
Recent strides have been made to identify gene mutation events driving cases of lung adenocarcinoma in never-smokers, but the underlying genetic events leading to these lung cancers still remain unknown in a large number of cases. In this report, using a combination of genome sequencing and RNA sequencing, a team of researchers in South Korea has characterized a previously unknown gene fusion event in a case of lung adenocarcinoma striking a 33-year-old Korean male with no history of smoking or cancer within his family.
The group sequenced and compared the genome of the patient's cancer and normal tissue (blood), but they found no mutations in known-cancer related genes, such as EGFR, KRAS, and EML4-ALK mutations, that were likely to explain this case. Delving deeper, they also sequenced RNA isolated from the cancer cells, which when analyzed, can reveal gene rearrangement events that are difficult to detect by genome sequencing and may be driving the cancer.

Video of this incident was caught on a home security camera last week and the 21-second clip has now been viewed more than 4 million times on YouTube. FedEx's Senior VP of U.S. Operations, Matthew Thornton, III, has since recorded a public apology, saying he was "upset and embarrassed" by the incident.
"This goes directly against all FedEx values; it's just who we are," he says. "While this delivery did not live up to that high standard, we are already using it as a learning opportunity. We have shared the video internally as a reminder that every single package is precious cargo to you, our customers."
Thornton says the customer accepted the company's apology?and presumably a replacement monitor?and is satisfied. (The FedEx employee has been taken off of delivery rounds.)
That's fine, but a similar shipping catastrophe happened to PopMech a few years ago when we shipped a custom-built gaming PC to a sweepstakes winner. It showed up in pieces. So we wanted to know just how high the delivery standards of FedEx, along with the U.S. Postal Service (USPS) and UPS, truly are. Senior tech editor Glenn Derene stuffed a box with sensors and data loggers and sent it on an epic cross-country journey with all three carriers to find out who was the kindest to our packages.
USPS was the gentlest, with a per-trip average of 0.5 acceleration spikes over 6 g's, but UPS actually flipped the packages over the least. FedEx was best at keeping the box at a stable temperature. However, when we marked the boxes "Fragile," all three carriers gave it above-average bruising. Read all of our findings here.
And check out these packing tips to ensure that your presents arrive in one piece, just in case the handling isn't all it's cracked up to be.

COMMENTARY | For years, baby boomers took their eventual enrollment in Medicare Part B for granted. Now that it's time to sign up, the decision to enroll is pretty murky.
Medicare Part B pays in part for the services of doctors and other health care providers, according to Medicare.gov. Unlike Part A, which is free, it has a monthly premium. What do enrollees pay? It depends.
Federal law prohibits any increases in Part B premiums in years when there's no cost-of-living adjustment in Social Security benefits, AARP reports. In 2009 and 2010, seniors already under Part B continued to pay $96.40 a month.
About 25 percent of Medicare beneficiaries weren't so lucky. These folks paid Medicare directly instead of having the premiums deducted from Social Security benefits, were new enrollees, or paid elevated premiums linked to high incomes. The law doesn't apply to them. Each paid $110.50 a month for Part B in 2010 and at least $115.40 (more with a high enough income) in 2011.
This is supposed to change in 2012. All Medicare Part B beneficiaries are slated to pay $99.90 -- an increase for some but a significant decrease for the rest.
That's a small consolation to some prospective enrollees. Many of those who retired or will retire from public service will receive Social Security benefits reduced due to public pension offsets. Others aren't eligible for any monthly benefits.
If they're no longer working, the question is where to get the money to pay for Part B premiums. This dilemma also affects boomers eligible for Medicare at 65 but who want to wait to collect Social Security benefits at their full retirement age of 66 or older.
Another potential deal breaker for many prospective Part B enrollees is the physician reimbursement issue. Doctors consider the Medicare physician payment formula a failure and want its permanent repeal, the American Medical Association insists.
While Congress struggles with a two-month vs. a 12-month stopgap measure -- or none at all -- would-be Part B enrollees are getting pretty vocal responses from their doctors. A Virginia husband and wife, both retired feds, just turned thumbs down on the coverage. Three of their five doctors announced that due to potentially lower reimbursements, they're no longer treating patients with Medicare Part B even if the individuals also have private health insurance.

NAIROBI, Kenya ? Ah, Christmas! Just the time to attack Christianity for spawning the ills of modern South African society, or so thinks President Jacob Zuma.
Zuma's affection for African traditions in general and Zulu ones in?particular is well known: When he's not busy marrying multiple wives?he's dancing in a leopard skin. So it wasn't entirely surprising when?he made a speech in defence of African traditions, but then he seemed?to go a little off-message.
"As Africans, long before the arrival of religion and [the] gospel, we?had our own ways of doing things. Those were times that the religious?people refer to as dark days but we know that, during those times,?there were no orphans or old-age homes. Christianity has brought along?these things," he said.
The outcry from church leaders?was as loud as it was predictable and Zuma's people were quick to?claim their man was quoted out of context.
Zuma was made pastor of a Gospel church in 2007. Paying lipservice to?religious belief is a vote winner in South Africa ? as it is in the US ??but Zuma's comments give the lie to his 2007 move to be ordained as?a pastor of a Gospel church.?

WASHINGTON ? A federal judge on Friday denied a government request for a more thorough and extensive psychiatric evaluation of a man charged with firing shots at the White House in what prosecutors say was an attempt to assassinate President Barack Obama.
The mental state of Oscar Ramiro Ortega-Hernandez, who prosecutors say harbored conspiracy theories and fantasies of killing the president, has been a critical issue since his arrest last month. Obama and his family were out of town and traveling at the time.
A preliminary psychiatric screening already found the suspect competent to stand trial, but prosecutors sought additional testing to conclusively resolve any concerns about his mental well-being before trial. They said the initial 50-minute screening, conducted in a cellblock of the courthouse, was incomplete because it did not take into account some of Ortega's more bizarre or outlandish behavior and statements. Prosecutors sought an additional in-patient evaluation of up to 30 days.
U.S. Magistrate Judge John Facciola, in rejecting the request for a thorough evaluation, said there currently was no evidence that Ortega was incompetent to stand trial. But he said prosecutors can renew their request for another evaluation if they believe Ortega's mental health is worsening as the case moves forward. He stressed the difference between a defendant's overall mental state and competence to stand trial, which is a narrower question.
"A delusional system does not in and of itself compel the conclusion of a defendant's incompetence," he said.
Ortega, who was 21 at the time of his arrest, sat silently and expressionless next to his lawyer during Friday's hearing.
Federal prosecutors say Ortega purchased a gun, scope kit and more than 1,200 rounds of ammunition and, after months of shooting practice, drove east from Idaho in mid-October with the goal of killing the president. On the night of Nov. 11, prosecutors say, Ortega pulled up along Constitution Avenue across the Ellipse from the White House and fired several rounds from a semi-automatic assault rifle out of the passenger-side window of his car. Authorities say he drove away, crashed his car and then fled on foot before being arrested five days later at a Pennsylvania hotel.
Days after the shooting, authorities located at least five bullet impact points on the south side of the White House or above the second story, court papers say. Two bullets were recovered from the White House ? including one from a window frame on the Truman Balcony.
Prosecutors have focused on a series of statements that Ortega made in a video he submitted to the Oprah Winfrey Network, including one calling marijuana the answer to world. His friends and acquaintances have said Ortega called himself the "modern-day Jesus Christ," considered Obama to be the antichrist, claimed to hear a voice from God and believed that the government was planning on tracking citizens by implanting global positioning system chips inside their bodies.
But Elizabeth Teegarden, a clinical psychologist who at the court's request interviewed Ortega for 50 minutes after his arrest, said Ortega denied being delusional or having hallucinations. She said there was no indication that he intended to harm himself or others, and no evidence of phobias or "bizarre thought content." When she asked him about statements from friends and acquaintances that he had intended to harm Obama, he either denied having made the statements or refused to talk about them altogether.
Ortega's public defender, David Bos, said Ortega not only is able to help in his defense but also "understands highly technical principles."
The next court hearing is Monday, when prosecutors will argue that he should be ordered held without bond before his trial. They say he has no ties to the area and has previous convictions in Idaho for theft, possession of drug paraphernalia and resisting arrest.
Ortega faces two separate bench warrants for failing to appear in court in Idaho and Utah. He faces a maximum sentence of life in prison if convicted of the current charges, prosecutors say.
"The violation charged in the complaint ? an attempted assassination of the President of the United States ? represents one of the most serious offenses in the federal criminal code," prosecutors wrote in court papers seeking his detention. "The tragedy that would have befallen the nation if Ortega-Hernandez had been successful is unspeakable."

AGPUR, India (AP) ? A high school student in central India was recognized as the world's shortest woman by Guinness World Records on Friday as she turned 18, saying she hopes to earn a degree and make it in Bollywood.
Jyoti Amge stood just 62.8 centimeters (24.7 inches) tall ? shorter than the average 2-year-old ? when Guinness representatives visiting from London measured her at a ceremony attended by about 30 family and friends in the town of Nagpur, in Maharashtra state.
A teary-eyed Amge, dressed in one of her finest saris, called the honor an "extra birthday present" and said she felt grateful for being small, as it had brought her recognition. After receiving a plaque, she and her guests cut a birthday cake.
"I have put Nagpur on the world map. Now everyone will know where it is," said Amge, who says she dreams of one day becoming a Bollywood film star as well as pursuing a university degree after she finishes high school this year.
"I want to be an actor," she said.
She measured 7 centimeters (2.76 inches) shorter than the 22-year-old American Bridgette Jordan, who had held the title since September.
"Jyoti encourages us all to look beyond mere size and to just celebrate our differences," Guinness adjudicator Rob Molloy said.
This was not Amge's first Guinness record. Until Friday she was considered the world's shortest teenager, but in turning 18 qualified for the new title. She has grown less than 1 centimeter (0.4 inch) in the last two years, Guinness said in a statement, and will grow no more due to a form of dwarfism called achondroplasia.
Her teenage title brought the chance for multiple Guinness-sponsored trips to Japan and Italy for tours and meetings with other record holders, she said.
The title of shortest woman in history continues to be held by Pauline Musters, who lived in the Netherlands from 1876 to 1895 and stood 61 centimeters (24 inches) tall.
